Why this kit for Christmas? Our all-in-one excavable ant farm features a cylindrical glass design. With a 360° excavable surface, our nest allows you to observe the colony's development and tunneling as needed. Compact, educational, and decorative, the 360° excavable nest (Size S) is a carefully crafted piece designed to promote myrmecology.

The materials chosen provide excellent living conditions for the ants, and the excavable design ensures an enjoyable observation experience. It will allow for the establishment of a foundation colony (queen + approximately 5 to 30 workers) and up to several hundred workers.

In short: It uses no glue, silicone, or chemicals. Made entirely of glass and reconstituted stone, with a peripheral acrylic lid for applying escape-proof sealant. Humidification is achieved via an easy-to-refill glass tube, which can be refilled several times if necessary until the sand is moistened. The nest then maintains sufficient humidity for days.

Regarding the substrate: We use a sand and clay-based substrate that is stable when moist and easy to dig. Our observations have shown that digging their nest increases ant growth and reduces stress. However, this can sometimes make the ants less visible. To mitigate this, we added an insert in the middle of the sand to prevent them from hiding too deep. We recommend this nest for large species, Messor ants (which can store their seeds on the surface), Camponotus ants, or any fast-growing species.

Instructions for use:

• Add 10ml of water the first time to the glass humidification column (tube embedded in the middle), then 5ml every 7 to 15 days. The composite retains moisture for a long time.
• Apply an escape-proof product under the round frame that covers the edges of the nest while allowing air to circulate and providing a place to deposit food. Talc, paraffin oil, or Fluon are suitable options.
• Wait until the moisture is well absorbed and empty the ants from their original tube into the "feeding area" on the surface of the nest and leave the anti-escape frame in place.
• We recommend adding a 5ml water dish filled with water regularly. Place species-appropriate food on the surface of the nest in a small dish.

 

Caution: Do not heat directly (with a mat, light bulb, cord, etc.). Like any terrarium, heating can crack the glass . A warm room is preferable, or gentle, even heating such as in a heated display case. Humidify with 5 ml of water per week, no more, as this may cause the nest to swell and crack, voiding the warranty. The nest is highly self-sustaining and remains moist for extended periods with minimal water.
