Our cricket jam is an easy way to provide your ants with freshly preserved protein without feeding them live insects. The crickets (Acheta domesticus) have been gently steamed to ensure their nutritional value, flavor, and aroma are preserved. This also softens the insects' chitinous exoskeletons, making them easier to digest. The collagen proteins are broken down for better utilization by the ants. Acheta domesticus puree has the same nutritional value as live crickets but is much easier to digest.
Cricket jam is unsuitable for ant species that require live food (for example, Ponerinae (primordial ants) such as Harpegnathos or Odontomachus). However, you might be surprised by its success with most species if their population size and the presence of larvae justify a strong demand for protein.
