This Aphaenogaster subterranea is somewhat unique and can be found in many regions of France if one knows how to spot its discreet colonies. In captivity, it is easy to feed (sugar liquids, insects, solid foods, etc.) although it does not practice trophallaxis (food sharing between workers).

The fact that it thrives in moderate temperatures is also an advantage. Aphaenogaster subterranea doesn't necessarily require a heating system if the room temperature exceeds 21 or 22 degrees Celsius.

Its color varies from very dark brown to orange. It is very different from Aphaenogaster senilis because the latter are larger, more aggressive, and less shiny in appearance.

Queen size of Aphaenogaster subterranea: 8mm.
Worker size: 4 to 7mm
. Recommended rearing temperature: approximately 24°C.
Overwintering: 2-3 months at 10-15°C.
Humidity requirement: High.
