Camponotus claripes is a large, dark-colored ant species endemic to Australia, with light-colored legs. Faster to develop and easier to keep, it is a good alternative to European Camponotus ants. It has major workers (larger workers) that complement the minor and media worker castes. The workers measure 4 to 10 mm.

Camponotus claripes doesn't sting but can bite hard; however, it remains fairly peaceful and is mostly nocturnal, searching for nectar and small insects. If threatened, it may fold its legs and play dead until the threat passes! It often climbs trees and may even drop to escape.

Breeding them is fairly easy and requires a temperature of 27°C in a standard nest with a honeydew-based diet. Humidity should be moderate (always a small damp area). This species forms small colonies of around 100 workers.
