Description of Lasius grandis:

Lasius grandis is a small, easy-to-breed species similar to Lasius niger. All the breeding advice for the latter is applicable to Lasius grandis, and we invite you to refer to its page for more details.

The specific characteristics of Lasius grandis: slightly lighter in color than Lasius niger, it remains difficult to distinguish, but its habitat frequency differs somewhat. Commonly found around the Mediterranean, it nevertheless prefers humid environments and thrives easily in tubes and moderately sized, well-heated ant nests, fed with sugary liquids and insects. The brood is abundant, development is good, and the queen has a long lifespan.

Lasius grandis is a good choice for beginners or for those aiming to establish a large, active, and visually appealing colony.
A milder overwintering period than Lasius niger is recommended, 2 to 3 months at around 8 to 18°C.

Queen size: approximately 9 mm.
Worker size: approximately 3-4 mm.
Diet: sugary protein liquids, jellies, insects.
Humidity: Medium, adapts well.
Temperature: 27°C during the day in part of the nest, slightly cooler at night (no less than 19°C).
Hibernation: mandatory from November 15th to January 15th minimum (2 to 3 months), at a temperature of 5 to 17°C.
Carefully monitor humidity and continue feeding the ants during this period if they are active.

Species incompatible with frost-free ant nests, like all colonies with a queen!
