Description of Lasius flavus:

In the wild, Lasius ants rarely leave their nests, which are mounds of earth covered with grass, typical of this species. They are adept at raising root aphids to feed themselves. It is in captivity that their mysterious behavior will be revealed through the glass of your Artificial Ant Farm.

Lasius flavus turns out to be much more active than it might seem; it is in fact a remarkably gifted builder and you might be tempted to fill the chambers of your anthill with Oasis brand moss allowing it to dig its own galleries (the contrast of yellow ants/green moss is also very aesthetic).

Simply ensure the ant farm is very humid and the substrate layer is approximately 4-5 mm thick. Lasius flavus also thrives in pre-dug ant farms; the important thing is that it's designed for high humidity. Contact us if you have any questions about your ant farm.

In captivity, they will appreciate sugary liquids as well as small insects. Since Lasius flavus rarely ventures outside, an external feeding area at the end of a long tube is not recommended, and closing the feeding area with the lid provided (if applicable) can facilitate its use by this species.

Queen size: approximately 9 mm.
Worker size: approximately 3-4 mm.
Diet: sugary protein liquids, jellies, small insects.
Humidity: Very high. A custom-built ant farm is recommended.
Temperature: 24-27°C during the day in part of the nest, slightly cooler at night (no less than 19°C).
Hibernation: 2-3 months at 8-17°C, preferably between 9 and 12°C. Carefully monitor the humidity and continue feeding the ants during this period if they are active.

Species incompatible with frost-free ant nests, like all colonies with a queen!
