The size difference is striking between the 6-millimeter queen and the tiny workers, barely over a millimeter long. These small workers resemble Crematogaster and release a defensive substance from their stinger held above their heads.
Although tiny, this species is interesting for its rapid development and the activity observed within the colony. Adult colonies can reach an impressive size, and this small, pale yellow species proves to be more intriguing and endearing than it first appears.
Warning: Solenopsis fugax requires extremely high humidity! The ant farm must be adapted to this species, but its small size also allows it to be raised for a certain time in a tube, provided that a nearly airtight stopper is used.
When feeding, make sure the worker ants don't get stuck in the liquids. If they do, add a few strands of cotton to absorb them. Also, be careful of condensation.
Solenopsis fugax feeds on biscuit crumbs, insects, jelly, and many other foods in very small quantities. It is advisable to quickly remove any uneaten food, especially jelly, which can liquefy in the high humidity of the tube or nest.
