Camponotus cruentatus is a rather rare and sought-after species that impresses with its size: the queen measures approximately 15mm and the workers can measure up to 18mm, or even more in large colonies: this Camponotus holds the record for the largest worker in France with 21mm!
As for the young colonies, they contain workers of approximately 7mm.
All our colonies, of all species, are carefully raised in our laboratory from a single queen from a swarm in order to guarantee their good health.
With its long legs, matte black coloration, and reddish abdomen, Camponotus cruentatus is a remarkable ant that never fails to fascinate its keeper. Keeping Camponotus cruentatus is particularly rewarding and has been one of our favorites since we started.
She is also quite aggressive and reactive and will not hesitate to defend herself if attacked. Her reactions are remarkably quick.
Camponotus, however, develops more slowly and is less recommended for beginners than Messor, for example, as it needs to be fed approximately 3 to 7 times a week with sugary liquids, small dead insects, and various solid or liquid foods. A warm temperature is also important for its development.
All our artificial ant farm models are perfectly suited to Camponotus cruentatus. Simply moisten the ant farm more lightly to meet its lower needs compared to Messor barbarus.
Queen size: approximately 15mm.
Worker size: 6 to 21mm.
Recommended daytime temperature: 30°C with a cooler area.
Recommended nighttime temperature: 19-24°C.
Food: sugary and protein-rich liquids, insects, etc.
Hibernation: 6 weeks at 8-17°C. Carefully monitor humidity and continue feeding the ants during this period.
