Description

Breeding module for leafcutter ants (Atta and Acromyrmex): Island Concept cylindrical fungus farm 9x10cm – Fourmiculture

A module compact, reliable and aesthetic to finally succeed in raising and developing a young colony of leafcutter antsthanks to the Island Concept exclusive

Modular, reliable, and radically innovative, we designed our modules with a professional approach, inspired by the best breeding techniques used in museums and tropicariums. We offer a reliable solution to finally provide stable and ideal conditions for leafcutter ants, which are notoriously difficult to breed.

Tested and Approved Solution : Used in our own professional breeding operation in Grenoble, this solution allows us to successfully breed our own colonies for sale and exhibitions.

The Island Concept is named for its placement in 3 to 4 cm of water, ensuring absolute security against escapes. A key feature is its absorbent concrete base (the formula for which has been developed and tested by Fourmiculture since 2023), which provides stable, reliable, and long-lasting humidity for leafcutter ants, whose very specific needs must be met.

Furthermore, ants have a natural instinct to throw their waste into water and dislike accumulating it near the nest: no need to waste space and money on a waste container. Your ants are protected from mites, mold, and the nuisances caused by waste. Simply change the water weekly or install a pump and filter.

Designed by Fourmiculture – Made in France. Several molding and finishing stages are required to achieve optimal results. The acrylic cylinder is removable and embedded in a raised, absorbent concrete base. Sandblasted finish. High-quality, recessed Plexiglas lid.

Guaranteed success: Buy 1 mushroom module + 1 feeding module + 1 Atta or Acromyrmex colony together on our website and automatically receive a 6-month guarantee on your colony's survival 👍

Tips for setting up your leafcutter ant colony:

  • 1️⃣ To ensure the success of your Atta or Acromyrmex breeding program, it is strongly recommended to place the module inside a closed bell jar, in an aquarium filled with 3 to 4 cm of water, or in a watertight container placed inside a closed plastic box or display case. This confined environment helps maintain a high overall humidity level and creates a microclimate suitable for your Atta and Acromyrmex.

  • 2️⃣ Maintain a stable temperature of 23-25°C inside the bell jar or device, without day/night fluctuations, to protect the ants from temperature changes, condensation, mold, and the many other problems associated with traditional breeding modules. Ideally, heat from above, possibly with ventilation. Do not heat the water, the underside, or the inside of the mushroom house. For example, use a heating cable or mat attached under the aquarium hood.

  • 3️⃣ To meet the ants' needs, it is highly recommended to provide them with pre-moistened, wrung-out, extra-fine sphagnum peat moss, placed at the bottom of the module to a depth of approximately 3-4 cm. This will allow the ants to build a protective structure on the mushroom and temporarily hide, and to adjust or close the ventilation openings as needed. The excess peat moss will be gradually removed and discarded into the water by the ants. Our concept offers your ants conditions very close to their natural ideal, but they are the only ones who know exactly how to adjust their environment. Therefore, provide them with the right tools and relax while they work.

  • 4️⃣ If the colony is very small, you can place a small amount of fresh leaves and rose petals directly near the mushroom, otherwise on the lid of the mushroom house, then on the square platform. Soon after, you should add a feeding module by simply placing the new module platform to platform.

  • 5️⃣ Clean the water regularly, as the ants will throw their waste and substrate into it. You can lift the modules by the platform (not by the cylinder) and place them in a temporary container while you empty and change the water. For optimal setup, it is recommended to add an aquarium-type pump and filtration system.

Tip for a Museum-Grade Leaf-Cutter Ant Keeping:

Our concept offers a unique opportunity to create a stunning tropical exhibit worthy of a museum: an elongated glass tank, LED lighting on top, periodic misting, and tropical plants for a superb jungle effect. The ants can thus integrate into a natural and scientific ecosystem, complete with a water cycle and the use of plants to purify their waste.

For a large colony, we recommend larger modules (12cm in diameter instead of 9cm) with a lighted lid and can create custom installations (tank, lighting, plants, filtration, complete ecosystem etc).

Exclusive benefits:

  • “Island” concept – must be placed in 3 to 4 cm of water for natural escape protection, without using greasy or toxic products.
  • Guaranteed humidity – the absorbent concrete base absorbs moisture by capillary action and ensures stable and long-lasting conditions.
  • Modular – simply place several modules with the square platform next to each other to create a continuous exploration area. Ideal with an Island Concept leafcutter ant foraging area where the ground remains dry.

Main features:

  • Elegant cylindrical design – A compact and streamlined format that ensures superb 360° observations.
  • Square platform – Allows you to create a continuous platform between several modules, to deposit leaves (preferably adding a compatible feeding area).
  • Custom-machined cover – precisely recessed for a discreet, high-end finish.
  • Removable anti-mite grid – ultra-thin, recessed into the lid, it can be placed to temporarily close the mushroom farm.
  • White substrate – highlights the ants and makes them easier to observe. Ideal surface for adding gravel, roots, etc.
  • Integrated absorbent concrete base – raises the cylinder and absorbs moisture by capillary action.

Technical specifications:

  • Platform dimensions: 15x15cm (allow approximately 3cm of margin on each side to prevent escapes)
  • Cylinder diameter: 9cm. Cylinder height: 10cm
  • Total height with base: 15cm
  • Materials: Absorbent concrete R6, acrylic.
  • Ideal for young colonies of up to approximately 1000 workers and several months of development per module.
