Description of Lasius flavus:

In the wild, Lasius emerge very little from their nests in grass-covered earthen mounds, typical of this species. They know how to raise root aphids in order to feed themselves. It is in breeding that their mysterious behavior will be revealed through the window of your Artificial Anthill.

Polygynous colonies with multiple queens HERE !

Lasius flavus turns out to be much more active than it might lead one to believe, it is indeed a remarkably gifted builder and you might be tempted to fill the chambers of your anthill with Oasis brand moss allowing it to dig its own galleries (the yellow ants/green moss contrast is also very aesthetic).

Just make sure the anthill is very moist and the substrate thickness is around 4-5mm. Lasius flavus also lives very well in pre-dug anthills, the important thing is that it is designed for high humidity. Contact us if you have any doubts about your anthill.

In breeding, they will therefore appreciate sweet liquids but also small insects. Since Lasius flavus does not come out much, an external feeding area at the end of a long pipe is not recommended and closing the feeding area with the cover that may be provided may facilitate its use by this species.

Size of queen: about 9mm
Size of workers: about 3-4mm
Food: sugary protein liquids, jellies, small insects.
Humidity: Very high.
Custom-made anthill recommended. Temperature: 24-27°C during the day on part of the nest, a little less at night (not less than 19°C).
Wintering: 2-3 months at 8 to 17°C, preferably between 9 and 12°C. Keep an eye on the humidity and continue to feed the ants during this time if they are active.

Species incompatible with gel anthills, like all colonies with a queen!
