Description
Messor barbarus polygyne
This species of granivorous ant offers very pleasant observations because of the size differences (minor, media and major workers) which are classified according to their roles in the colony and their sizes.
Easy to raise because it feeds on seeds which it stores up for weeks or months, it offers an excellent ratio between investment, constraints and the pleasure of raising.
With two queens in the same colony, the experience of breeding Messor barbarus ants takes on a new dimension. While generally monogynous (a single queen per colony), some colonies naturally form with multiple queens in the wild. This is what we recreate under controlled conditions to offer stable polygynous colonies.
The queens are generally distinguishable by the color of their head, which varies from one queen to another, from black to red.
