Fourmiculture presents its limited edition creation: the Plexi Minora Ant Farm Generation 2.6

Designed by Fourmiculture and built using the latest technologies, La Minora was conceived in 2010 and refined over seven years before this new generation was unveiled in 2020 in its matte black finish with fluorescent red trim. More advanced and healthier than a purely Plexiglas nest, La Minora is an artificial ant farm that provides excellent living conditions for ants and allows for clear observation of their behavior.

The name "Ant House" comes from the small worker ants, "minor," because it is designed to successfully establish and develop a young ant colony for over a year, regardless of species, from 3 to 16 mm in length. Also efficient in the long term thanks to its advanced design, it allows you to monitor the colony's growth and expand as needed via its connecting system.

Natural chambers.

Inspired by natural ant nests to optimize their use, the chambers are cut from 8mm thick food-grade Plexiglas® and fixed to a damp mineral base. This height compromise is suitable for both large and small species and can house a few hundred Messor ants or several thousand Pheidole ants, providing over a year's worth of development time.

Fourmiculture Design .
A thin sheet of fluorescent red Plexiglas®, shaped to fit the chambers, was added at floor level. The fluorescence of this material works by absorbing invisible UV rays and converting them into visible red light. The result is exceptional brightness and an extraordinary design.

The red plate is covered with a thicker sheet of matte black Plexiglas®, which is then covered by the laser-cut glass. All of these plates are bolted onto the mineral humidifier.

High-performance and innovative mineral humidifier.

Built on its humidifier made of Plexiglas and reinforced plaster, the Minora provides a healthy, natural environment for ants, precise humidity control, and a good bacterial balance. The ant farm remains healthy over the long term, and the ants thrive.

Water is absorbed by the green moss and then transferred to the mineral substrate of the chambers, providing the ants with a clearly defined wet and dry zone. Three chambers are humid, and five are drier. This allows the ants to choose the humidity level they need, enabling the Minora to accommodate almost any species.

The glass is cleanable and replaceable, guaranteed for 30 years against yellowing and extremely transparent with 92% light transmission.

All the activity of the colony, usually invisible in the underground chambers, is revealed through the crystal-clear glass, and its secret organization unfolds freely there: food management, egg-laying, brood care…

Intelligent connection system. Open or closed?

The space is generally sufficient for more than a year of continuous development.

And then what? The Minora 2.6 is equipped with an original and intelligent linking system: 2 holes of 9mm allow a second ant farm to be connected to the first once it is fully colonized (although the ants adapt to the available space) or to an external feeding area such as one of our Observation Spaces.

This connection system is particularly practical thanks to its rectangular, two-position (Open or Closed) access panels, which replace the usual rubber plugs. This system even allows you to manage the flow of water without disconnecting the existing accessory (external feeding area, tube, etc.): simply rotate the partition one way or the other to allow or block passage!

Integrated feeding area on the Plexi Minora ant farm.

You will have the option of placing your colony's food in the feeding area, accessible via a lid. Its laser-cut ventilation system removes moisture and refreshes the air, making the ants feel as if they are outdoors. A unique, handcrafted micro-decoration is created each time using simple, natural materials, while a laser engraving authenticates our work.
To further enhance the experience, an external feeding area will be useful once the colony is well-established. For example, an optional Observation Area can be connected to the Minora as shown above. It offers a more spacious environment for foraging ants without allowing them to escape, despite its open design: a non-stick frame prevents any escapes.

An anti-stress Hyperfilter for your Ants (optional).

Ants thrive in ambient light. However, in bright light conditions or during your workday, you can choose to place your ants in darker conditions thanks to an innovative optical filter.

Made from fluorescent Plexiglas®, the Hyperfilter absorbs light and transmits some of it through fluorescence along its edge. The remaining light that passes through the filter is barely visible to ants, which cannot distinguish red and therefore feel protected.
