Description of Pogonomyrmex barbatus

This is a beautiful, coppery-red species native to North America, similar to our Messor ant, though more aggressive. Highly insectivorous, it hunts and appreciates the presence of insects in its rather varied diet. Capable of stinging to hunt, Pogonomyrmex barbarus lives in fairly dry, sandy environments and thrives in artificial ant farms and nests, possibly supplemented with sand. This North American ant also stores seeds and can live for extended periods on its reserves, making it very affordable to keep. The powerful workers grind the seeds for food despite the absence of large majors.

Its good size, relative ease of breeding and its fairly robust and colourful morphology make it a very beautiful species that we are delighted to offer online.
