Description of Pogonomyrmex barbatus

It is a beautiful species of coppery red color native to North America, similar to our Messor, although more aggressive. Very insectivorous, it hunts and appreciates the presence of insects in its rather varied diet. Able to sting to hunt, Pogonomyrmex barbarus lives in fairly dry and sandy environments and grows well in tubes and artificial anthills, possibly supplemented with sand. This North American ant also fills its seed lofts and can live for a long time on its reserves, making its breeding very affordable. Powerful workers grind the seeds for food despite the absence of large majors.

Its good size, a certain ease of breeding and its fairly robust and colorful morphology make it a very beautiful species that we are delighted to offer online.

  • Size: About 10-11mm for the queen, 5-10mm for the workers
