Despite its small size, Tetramorium caespitum thrives thanks to its rapid growth and the ability to form very populous colonies. Furthermore, its capacity to remain active year-round and to develop continuously gives it a significant advantage over other ants, and also benefits its keeper, who can enjoy observing it throughout the year.
No loss of development and no adverse effects were observed in the laboratory after years of rearing at 27°C 365 days a year!
Tetramorium caespitum is therefore a species worth discovering, also for its unique diet: it enjoys biscuit crumbs, small insects, certain sweet liquids, and even soft seeds opened with a finger or crushed nuts and hazelnuts. It can be a little fussy at first, but there are many possibilities for feeding it. We recommend focusing on insects (fresh mealworms cut in half) to ensure rapid development and prevent food rejection.
