Description

First woodlouse breeding kit with LED jar, plants and substrate. A side project for ant enthusiasts and other creature lovers!

Discover the life cycle of French woodlice in a more colorful, captive-bred form. Porcello scaber live throughout your garden and are easily kept in terrariums. They can be kept with other, larger animals and act as recyclers, feeding on their waste. They recycle dead wood, dead leaves, excrement, fish flakes, vegetable peelings, and more.

These are isopods, meaning terrestrial crustaceans, not insects. These creatures lived during the time of the dinosaurs and have evolved and shrunk to reach us today… Easily adaptable, they thrive in captivity and reproduce over time to develop their colony.

The result will be particularly decorative thanks to the plants and mosses provided (depending on availability and creative inspiration), the different layers of substrate, and the LED lighting integrated into the glass jar. You can thus create a small cabinet of curiosities and observe the very simple care of the woodlice.

Raising woodlice can potentially be combined with keeping ants in a terrarium. However, we offer this woodlouse colony primarily for the purpose of learning about their rearing separately, for educational purposes, or for enthusiasts of unusual insects!

The kit contains:

  • 5x Porcello scaber Ghost woodlice
  • 20g of food (fish flakes, brewer's yeast, jelly, etc.).
  • 15cm jar with integrated LED lighting in the cork stopper
  • Drainage (1st layer)
  • Plant potting soil (2nd layer)
  • Nutrient substrate for Porcello scaber with humus and special shredded wood (3rd layer)
  • 1 Green plant or moss suitable for terrarium life and decoration

Instructions for use:

  • Place a maximum of 1cm of drainage at the bottom of the terrarium, then a few centimeters of potting soil, then a few centimeters of isopod substrate.
  • Feel free to add a border of white sand between the layers of potting soil, only around the edge, for a decorative effect.
  • Plant the plants provided or those of your choice from among the plants suitable for terrariums (fittonia, ficus pumila, ivy, etc.).
  • Add some moss if you like, a little dead wood, some decorations… And the woodlice!
  • Monitor the condition of the terrarium, add special substrate over time, change the substrate after 1 year if necessary, provide some dead leaves and dead wood as well as the recommended food (in small quantities) to feed your Woodlice.
  • Keep the terrarium in a bright location but out of direct sunlight, at a temperature between 20 and 24°C. Woodlice do not like high temperatures.
