For the Messor:
Simply give them a spoonful of seeds whenever their reserves are running low, and that's it! A bag of food can last for months.
You can also observe their reaction to different sources of solid food.
For most other species:
A diet based on sugary and protein-rich liquids is recommended; only Messor feeds on seeds. We offer powders that can be diluted. One drop is sufficient for small colonies; it should be placed in a dish using a syringe.
No, because our ant farms are completely sealed. Furthermore, the higher-end models incorporate non-stick walls that will discourage most ants from climbing them and will make handling easier when opening the feeding area lid.
Simply add water to the reservoir before installing them and keep it topped up regularly. It is strongly recommended to use demineralized water to prevent the reservoir from clogging.
You will have a choice between two solutions:
– Leave the colony in its artificial anthill; the population will stabilize
– Or connect the ant farm to another, regardless of its model, using a tube and the connecting hole between the two farms. This will allow your colony to continue developing!
It is recommended to heat your colony to approximately 27°C during the day and slightly less at night to ensure its development. For this purpose, we provide heating mats that are easy to use and energy-efficient.
Overwintering of Messor barbarus: If possible, 45 days between 10 and 18°C to ensure the colony's rest.
Overwintering of Messor minor, Pheidole pallidula and Tetramorium caespitum: These species can remain active and warm all year round!
Overwintering of other species: 45 days to 3 months between 8 and 18°C depending on the origin of the species.
Where it will not be exposed to direct sunlight, where the temperature is suitable and away from any chemicals, perfumes, insecticides and dust.
The lifespan of the queen and the colony is not predictable in advance but can reach 15 to 20 years!
Our experience shows that the ants arrive at their destination without any problems, even abroad. This is not a source of stress that could endanger the colony, and during transport, their rearing system provides the humidity and food they need.
However, please remember that we may postpone sending the ants to the beginning of the week to improve their comfort during transport and that shipping may be delayed in case of adverse weather conditions.
We only guarantee delivery if you choose a carrier capable of delivering within a maximum of 48 hours.
The feeding area serves to distribute food to your ants but also allows them to dispose of waste (mainly leftover food and dead workers). You can periodically remove this waste with tweezers, or, more effectively, close the nest entrance, remove the ants with soft-bristled tweezers, and clean the feeding area with a vacuum cleaner. Simply ensure that no ants remain inside and do not touch any escape-proof lining. Also, be sure to remove waste before it accumulates and reaches the escape-proof lining, as it is only effective when kept clean.
