How do I feed my ants?

For the Messors:

Just give them a spoonful of seeds each time their supply runs low, and that's it! A packet of food can last for months.

You can also observe their reaction to different sources of solid food.

For most other species:

A diet based on sweet and protein liquids is recommended, only Messor feeds on seeds. We offer in particular powders to be diluted. One drop is sufficient for small colonies, to be deposited with a syringe on a dish.

Are my ants at risk of escaping?

No, because our anthills are perfectly closed. In addition, the more upscale models incorporate non-stick walls that will discourage most ants from climbing there and facilitate handling when opening the lid of the feeding area.

How to maintain the humidity level that ants need?

You will only need to add water to the tank before installing them and always keep it level by adding water regularly. It is strongly recommended to use demineralized water in order to avoid clogging of the tank.

What to do when my colony has filled the entire nest?

You will have the choice between two solutions:

– Leave the colony in its artificial anthill, the population will stabilize,

– Or connect the anthill to another, regardless of its model, using a pipe and the anthill connection hole. The development of your colony can thus continue!

How do I heat my colony?

It is advisable to heat your colony to around 27°C during the day and a little less at night to ensure its development. For this, we provide heating mats, which are simple to use and energy efficient.

How can I ensure a winter rest for my ants?

Wintering of Messor barbarus: If possible, 45 days between 10 and 18°C to ensure the rest of the colony.

Wintering of Messor minor, Pheidole pallidula and Tetramorium caespitum: These species can stay active and warm all year round!

Wintering for other species: 45 days to 3 months between 8 and 18°C depending on the origin of the species.

Where should I place my ants?

Where direct sunlight won't reach it, where the temperature is suitable and away from any chemicals, perfumes, insecticides and dust.

How long can my colony live?

The lifespan of the queen and the colony is not predictable in advance but can reach 15 to 20 years!

Is postal transport a problem for ants?

Our experience shows that ants reach their destination without problems, even abroad. This is not a source of stress that could endanger the colony and during transport, their breeding system provides the humidity and food they need.

However, remember that we can postpone sending the ants to the beginning of the week to improve their comfort during transport and that the expedition can be delayed in the event of unfavorable weather conditions.

We only guarantee delivery if you choose a carrier capable of delivering to you within 48 hours maximum.

What about the maintenance of the artificial anthill?

The feeding area is used to distribute food to your ants but also allows them to evacuate their waste (mainly leftover food and dead workers). You can periodically remove this waste using pliers, or, more effectively, close the entrance to the nest, remove the ants using flexible pliers and clean the feeding area with a vacuum. You just have to make sure that there are no ants left inside and that you don't touch the possible anti-escape coating. Also, be sure to remove trash before it accumulates and touches the anti-escape liner as it is only effective when kept clean.
