Description

The Glass 360 Digging Nest allows you to observe ants in a natural way.

Rich in improvements, it offers a new concept in cylindrical glass. With a 360° digging surface, our nest allows you to follow the evolution of the colony and the digging of tunnels according to its needs. Compact, informative and decorative, the 360° diggable nest is a piece of craftsmanship carefully designed to promote myrmecology.

The materials chosen offer excellent living conditions for the ants and the digging concept ensures the pleasure of the observer. It will make it possible to raise a foundation (queen + 5 to 30 workers approximately) and up to several hundred workers.

In short: It does not use glue, silicone or chemicals. Entirely in glass and reconstituted stone, with a peripheral acrylic cover to apply anti-escape. Humidification is carried out by an easy-to-fill glass tube, several times if necessary, until the sand is moistened. The nest then retains sufficient humidity for days.

About the substrate: We use a sand and clay substrate, stable when wet and easy to dig. Our observations have shown that digging their nest increases the growth of ants and reduces their stress. On the other hand, the ants may sometimes be less visible. To limit this phenomenon, we have added an insert in the middle of the sand to prevent them from hiding too far in depth. We recommend this nest to large species, to Messor which can store its seeds on the surface, to Camponotus or to a species with strong growth.

Manual :

  • Add 10ml of water the first time in the glass humidification column (tube embedded in the middle) then 5ml every 7 to 15 days. The composite retains moisture for a long time. If the sand is not constantly a little damp, add a little water through the entrance hole of the nest so that the sand absorbs it directly.
  • Apply an anti-escape product under the round frame which covers the edges of the nest while allowing air to pass through and allowing the food to be deposited. Talc, paraffin oil or Fluon are possible.
  • Wait until the humidity is even and empty the ants from their original tube into the “feeding area” on the surface of the nest and leave the anti-escape frame in place.
  • We recommend adding a 5ml drinker filled with water regularly. Place the species-appropriate food on the surface of the nest on a dish.

Caution: Do not heat directly (carpet, cord, etc.). Like any terrarium, heating can crack the glass . Prefer a warm room, or gentle and even heating such as a heated display case. Moisten with 5ml of water per week, no more, at the risk of causing swelling of the nest and cracking outside of warranty. The autonomy of the nest is excellent and allows it to remain humid for a long time with little water.
