Description of Lasius grandis:

Lasius grandis is a small, easily reared species similar to Lasius niger. All of the latter's breeding advice is applicable to Lasius grandis and we invite you to refer to its page for more details.

The specificities of Lasius grandis: a little clearer than Lasius niger, it remains difficult to differentiate but frequency of slightly different environments. Commonly discovered around the Mediterranean, it nevertheless seeks humidity and rises easily in tubes and in anthills of moderate size, well heated, fed with sugary liquids and insects. The brood is important, the development is good, and the longevity of the queen is important.

Lasius grandis is a good choice for beginners or in order to obtain a large active and pleasant colony to observe.
A milder wintering than Lasius niger is recommended, 2 to 3 months around 8 to 18°C.

Size of queen: about 9mm
Size of workers: about 3-4mm
Food: sugary protein liquids, jellies, insects.
Humidity: Medium, adapts well.
Temperature: 27°C during the day on part of the nest, a little less at night (not less than 19°C).
Wintering: compulsory from November 15 to January 15 minimum (2 to 3 months), from 5 to 17°C.
Keep an eye on the humidity and continue to feed the ants during this period in case of activity.

Species incompatible with gel anthills, like all colonies with a queen!
