Magnificent species of an impressive size, around 18mm for the queen, with beautiful colored workers. Endemic to Australia, rarely seen for sale. Its main attraction is its size, your coloring, a certain ease of breeding and its great rarity. We have initiated import procedures and significant costs for a small number of colonies, which explains this price that we keep despite everything as fair as possible for our best customers. This offer may only come up once in France!
Breeding is rather easy because this species looks like a Formica and is related to this genus. However, the queen looks more like a Camponotus but the species has no majors (all workers are about the same size). The fairly large workers (up to about 10mm) are sand colored with a reddish head.
The foundation, even the breeding, is appreciated in an environment with humid substrate (plastic box with peat for example). The breeding in tube and nest remains possible.
The diet is based on sugary liquids and proteins and a temperature of 27°C is recommended for good development of the brood (larvae and cocoons). The species seems to be a good hunter and forms earthen domes with workers rather active at night to collect food in the shelter of the heat. Nostotigma foreli forms well-developed colonies with several thousand workers and the queen raises her first workers alone at first.
