Tapinoma erraticum and other Tapinoma are very similar to Lasius with which they can be confused. However, they are part of another very different subfamily whose species grow quickly and move very quickly on the ground in search of food.

Tapinoma erraticum is unique for several reasons. For example, its habit of changing nests regularly, thus making long highways of ants, each worker carrying the brood and protecting the queen to the new nest.

Conquering and aggressive, it secretes a chemical weapon capable of jamming the communications of other species. Man didn't invent anything...

We also notice its constant search for heat for a good development. She settles willingly under stones or in wood well exposed to the sun and if necessary, builds solariums in the ground where she can store the brood in the warmest. Despite the UVs that are usually harmful to the brood, she can also lay it outside, in full sun, to stimulate its growth.

The nymphs are not protected by a cocoon, unlike species of the Formicinae subfamily (Lasius, Camponotus, etc.).

Size of the queen: approximately 5mm.
Size of the workers: about 3-4mm.
Temperature: 27°C, a little less at night.
Wintering: 45 days at 15°C.
Food: sweet liquids, jellies, insects etc.
Humidity: Low to Medium
Species incompatible with freezing anthills, like all colonies with a queen!
